Spruce Pot Step-By-Step Instructions
1. Your kit will include a 12” cranberry pot with soil. If you are using your own container, be sure your soil is unthawed. It is acceptable to use sand instead of soil, you will need to figure out a way to keep the sand from running out of the bottom of your container. We use Styrofoam plates in ours. You could use a window box shaped container, or a drop in container that would fit it your own larger outdoor spring pots.
2. Your kit will include 4 spruce tops, Norway pine, which is the longer needled branch, and another type of greenery. This could be cedar, noble, balsam or Frasier fir. You will receive 2 stems of red twig dogwood, 3 pinecones and 2 stems of red berries.
3. We have trained so many of our customers that some of them could teach the class to us. We truly have the best, most supportive customers. The best part about this is that everybody’s will turn out different, but still beautiful. To begin you will need a pruner and a wire cutter. Gloves if you wish to keep your hands free from sap.
4. To start, we are going to sort out all of our items and lay them next to us. Find your tallest spruce top. Here is where you decide if you are going to make a one-sided arrangement or all around. I am going to make a one-sided arrangement, but we have an all-around arrangement to show you. The deciding factor will be if you are going to put it up against your house or garage, or will it be viewed from all sides. Be sure to trim off excess branches at the bottom of the spruce top so you have a nice clean stem to insert into your soil.
5. Shake out your tops to breath some life into them. They may have been bundled up tight for a few weeks. I start by placing the largest top in the back of the container. Then I am going to build around that. I will then place my other 3 spruce tops. You can place yours very vertically if you like, but I am going to put mine in at an angle to create more open space and a large looking arrangement. Visual space creates value.
6. Next, I will place my dogwood in the back of my container to continue our line upward. In the all-around container, we have placed them near the middle.
7. Take the Norway Pine and fill in between your spruce tops. The second type of greenery we have is used to fill in any spaces and to have some drape over the edge of the container.
8. Fluff your two stems of berries. Again, they come tight and all bundled up. Breath some life and space into your berries. This will create more value. We will zip tie them to the spruce top branches. Every type of berry we sell is waterproof and approved for our temperatures. Many of our customers keep their berries from year to year.
9. We will attach the pinecones with the wire that is provided on the pine cones. You can place them low or high or cluster them all together, wherever you like.
10. If you have purchased our lights in the past or if you would like to buy some these operate on 3 double A batteries. They are on a timer and are hardy for our outdoor weather. If you would like them to come on at 5pm click it at 5pm and it will be on for 6 hours and off for 18.
11. You can add in many items to jazz up your containers to suit your style. Birch poles, sugar cones, ornaments, snowman pics, your own imagination is your only limit.
12. Please water your containers when you are ready to put them into place. This is not for the branches to drink water, but to get the soil to freeze solid, so if a wind storm happens, your pot will not come apart if it tipped over.
