from our friend at milkhouse flowers
Milkhouse Flowers is a fresh-cut flower farm located near Glencoe, Mn. We grow a variety of cut flowers, including annuals, perennials, and bulb flowers on 1 ½ acres. Everything is grown out in the open field, which means our growing season is subject to Mother Nature—typically May to October. Each flower is hand seeded, planted, and harvested to bring our customers the freshest blooms our flower farm has to offer.
Milkhouse Flowers was started a few years after our family chose to change our farming model from milking dairy cows to raising dairy heifers. This new lifestyle left our milkhouse empty and a chance for me to pursue a fulfilling interest. After attending floral design school I began to grow and design with our own flowers in 2019. We started out selling our flowers at farmer’s markets and to our community. Quickly we realized how much people enjoyed our bouquets and arrangements. Today our flowers can be found and purchased at your local flower shop, local grocery store, our flower subscription service, and directly on our farm.
We have really tried to diversify ourselves with varieties of flowers that not only grow well in our MN climate but also have long-lasting bright blooms. We have quickly learned that no matter what we try, there are just certain varieties of flowers that don’t grow well in our soil type or don’t hold up in bouquets and arrangements. Each growing season we try a few new varieties. This year we have planted over 50 different varieties of flowers. Some of our favorite flowers growing this season are delphiniums, gladiolus, bupleurum, celosia, larkspur, zinnias, dahlias, and of course sunflowers. We grow six different varieties of sunflowers, including your traditional sunflower, white, gold, red, plum, and my favorite, a lemon bi-color variety. This past year we also planted four different peony varieties that we are excited about offering in the next couple of growing seasons.
I met Heather through a mutual correspondence in the perennial flower industry. A to Zinnia was the first floral shop that we sold our flowers to. Heather’s support to purchase and design with locally grown flowers has been exciting for our flower farm. To know that our flowers are reaching people outside of our local community is very rewarding. Milkhouse Flowers is proud to share with people that our flowers can be found at A to Zinnia!
